Reading Groups


Wednesdays 1.00pm to 3.30pm

Reading Group Year 1:
Average class size of ten 5-6 year olds (maternelle grande section in French system)
Programme: introduction to reading and writing in English using the Jolly Phonics and the Oxford Reading Tree schemes. Particularly concentrating on the beginning, middle and end sounds of simple 3 + 4 letter words; rhyming words; and high frequency sight words.

Reading Group Year 2:

Average class size of ten 6-7 year olds (CP in French system)
In this year we try to develop reading confidence and skills using the Oxford Reading Tree schemes. Language activities, including written and verbal exercises,  designed to assist the child in building up and progressing their writing, spelling, comprehension and creative writing skills.

Reading Group Year 3:

Average class size of ten 7-8 year olds, CE1 grade in the French system. The principle aim of this year is to encourage reading fluency, using the Oxford Reading Tree scheme and  the New Way (a phonetically based reading scheme). Creative writing is also introduced, along with simple spelling of phonetic words, building up to a knowledge of High Frequency spelling words towards the end of the year. Simple grammar is taught, but also emphasis is placed on the spoken language through poetry, songs and rhymes.  

Reading Group Year 4:

Average class size of ten 8-9 year olds. Encourages children of CE2 grade equivalent to consolidate and improve on their lexical / reading skills  through reading chosen graded story books or free readers, exposing them to a variety of written material such as letters, instructions and poems and improve their written and spoken fluency by introducing and practising further grammatical structures and nuances of the English language.

Reading Group Year 5 :

Average class size of ten 9-10 year olds, CM1 equivalent. In this year the focus is on encouraging children to build on their reading skills by continuing with free readers plus looking at other forms of literature such as play scripts. As well as this, we will practise further grammatical aspects of the English language, continue with regular spelling tests and develop writing skills.

Reading Group Year 6 :

Average class size of ten 10-11 year olds (CM2 equivalent). This year concentrates on helping the children to be more adept in their writing, with emphasis on the different genres of creative writing. They will use classic class readers to analyse books as a group, continue with regular spelling tests and concrete their grammar skills.
