Play and Reading Groups for English speaking children in the western suburbs of Paris.

We aim to create a happy, caring, secure and stimulating English speaking environment; where children are valued and respected and develop into independent, confident individuals. We believe that fun and learning should go hand in hand. The children gain pre-school skills through productive play and exploration in a relaxed, positive atmosphere.

1.00pm to 3.30pm

Children aged 3 ½ to 4 ½ (Petite/Moyenne section)

We have a ratio of one adult to 5 children .

With this group the focus is more on developing their communication, language and literacy skills.

In the first term, during free-play the older or more mature children also take part in short pre-reading, pre-writing or number activities which are adult directed.

At the beginning of the 2nd term the children are introduced  to Letterland.

Letterland is a child-friendly, multi-sensory system for teaching children to read, write and spell. Its use of  friendly letter characters  provide strong visual memory cues so children learn and retain phoneme/grapheme correspondences quickly.  Each week a new letter/character is introduced through arts and crafts, singing songs, worksheets and dressing up. At the end of the session, the children listen to a story related to the chosen character.

We promote social and language skills by stressing the importance of taking turns and listening to each other.  For instance during circle time we encourage the children to talk about what they have heard or seen.   This helps the children's involvement and self-esteem. Emergent writing skills are emphasised through the use of marking materials (pencils, crayons and felt-tips).  We encourage the children to read and write their own names.
